Synopsis: This book offers an inside view rather than a user view of operating systems. It stresses practical and mechanical aspects, rather than principles and theory. It is addressed principally to those studying computer engineering but will be useful for anyone with an interest in how systems work.
The main focus is on general-purpose time-sharing operating systems, because they are among the most complex and challenging; but special attention is devoted to personal and distributed systems because of their growing importance. The book is divided into six main parts:
• Functions and types of operating systems;
• Process management, including multiprogramming, scheduling, interprocess communication and synchronization, and deadlock handling;
• I/O management, including interrupt handling, buffer management, event queueing, and synchronization with user programs;
• Memory management, main memory allocation and virtual memory mechanisms;
• High level mechanisms: file management, including directory structures, file access, and file integrity; naming issues, and link editing; protection issues, and user authentication;
• Perspective view of operating system organization.
